Better Writing Through Editing
Jan Peterson and Stacy A. Hagen
Intermediate

This text teaches intermediate students how to edit their own writing for correct sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and expression. Using a systematic approach for studying writing and editing problems, students discover their individual strengths and weaknesses and are encouraged to monitor their own progress. The text is divided into three parts:

Part 1 – Getting Started, presents a diagnostic self-assessment and an editing system that teaches students to self-evaluate
Part 2 – Writing Focus, provides practice and features writing assignments based on a chapter theme and rhetorical focus
Part 3 – Editing Focus, used concurrently with Writing Focus, allows teachers to customize learning based on student needs. It provides clear explanations of editing problems and hundreds of grammar-based practice exercises that can be assigned based on specific errors that occur in student writing

Features
• Simple and concise grammar presentations focus on errors that are common for intermediate ESL/ELT students
• Error, Progress, and Sentence Type charts allow students to track their own progress
• Contextualized activities give students practice in areas such as runons, fragments, subject-verb agreement, singular/plural, noun/pronoun agreement, and prepositions
• Engaging thematic writing assignments give students practice writing in various rhetorical forms
